Killer WiFi Killed My Router

By Michael Gebis, Wed 13 January 2021, in category Networking

This is a story about how I noticed that whenever I connected my new laptop to my girlfriend's wifi, it seemed like the router would reboot, but I refused to believe it for about two hours. I literally said "It doesn't work that way."

Then I exhausted all other possibilities. Turns out it does work that way.

Just in case anyone comes across this post via search:

I haven't seen anyone else list this specific combo as problematic, but there are plenty of other examples of Killer wifi killing routers. It's hard to tell if this is a Killer problem or a Netgear problem, although Killer points the finger at the router. "The 1535/1435 is a cutting edge Wireless-AC device with MU-MIMO and Transmit Beamforming technology and, as such, not all access points have firmware already installed that can handle the connection."

As a workaround, if I connect to the 2.4GHz network, the router reboots cease. Hopefully this helps someone else.
